چکیده

Deformation monitoring systems seek to detect constant movements with time, varying movements with time or a sudden movement. A slow movement at the millimetre level will not be detected by comparing consecutive session solutions due to inaccuracies between sessions. However, comparisons over several sessions, or days, or weeks, could highlight slow consistent changes. The Allan variance is introduced to compare a new measurement with previous baseline data from varying epochs. A low-cost (singlefrequency), GPS-based volcano deformation monitoring system was developed, tested and deployed on the Mt Papandayan volcano, West Java, Indonesia. 21 days of data was collected in July 2001. Data analysis of this equatorial network was compared with a 21-day time series from the mid-latitude SAGE-NZ volcano deformation monitoring network. Errors due to differential tropospheric signal delay between GPS receivers with a large change in height, ionospheric effects, multipath, ambiguity resolution and monumentation etc are discussed and mitigated to reduce the time series repeatability. The Allan variance is applied to these time series’ to identify a temporal upper limit accuracy of the respective monitoring systems and help distinguish between a systematic error and a genuine geophysical signal for a new measurement.

Separablity of deformations and measurement noises of GPS time series with modified Kalman filter for landslide monitoring in real-time

The separation of the deformations and measurement noise of GPS coordinate time series and accuracy improvement of GPS real-time coordinates are major aspects of the thesis. In order to reduce the influence of the colored noise in the GPS position time series, three different methods have been compared: the Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter, the Kalman filter model, and the sequential algori...

Mitigating Differential Troposphere Effects for Gps-based Volcano Monitoring

The UNSW-designed GPS volcano monitoring system installed on Gunung Papandayan seeks to characterise the ground deformation within the volcanic edifice. Hourly baseline solutions produce a time series of data designed to detect any ground motion. Differential tropospheric effects between GPS receivers separated by a large change in height (in this case up to 1400m) impact on the quality of this...

Mitigation of Tropospheric Delay on InSAR Interseismic Displacements

One of the major challenges of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique is the existence of tropospheric effect on the results. The tropospheric effect is due to the changes of atmospheric parameters including temperature, pressure, and humidity between the master and slave images. In this research, two different methods based on spatial-temporal filters and calculation of pha...

Mixed-Mode GPS Network Processing for Deformation Monitoring Applications in the Equatorial Region

The Global Positioning System (GPS) can be utilised in a wide range of deformation monitoring applications. During the past few years a methodology has been developed for processing data collected by GPS networks consisting of a mixed set of single-frequency and dual-frequency receivers. The strategy is to deploy a few permanent, ‘fiducial’ GPS stations with dual-frequency, geodetic-grade recei...

Optimizing the Number of Double-Differenced Observations for GPS Networks in Support of Deformation Monitoring Applications

Deformation monitoring using GPS is usually carried out by installing and operating a local network of GPS receivers mounted on the deforming body, e.g. the flanks of a volcano. For continuous monitoring applications a near-realtime, epoch-by-epoch solution obtained from multibaseline processing is desired in order to take into account between-baseline correlations and to detect movements over ...
